The ophthalmic – outpatient department (OPD) handles a significant proportion of all Ophthalmology workload and activity. A significant proportion of both ophthalmic primary care and management of long term care for ophthalmic chronic conditions take place in the outpatient department. An increasing number of ophthalmology treatments such as laser photo coagulation, chalazion treatment, minor lid procedures etc are also being undertaken in the OPD making it the hub of all activity in an eye hospital.

As diseases of the ageing eye namely Cataract, Glaucoma etc are the most prevalent eye diseases, the majority of adult patients attending the ophthalmology OPD are over 65 years of age. So also the majority with refractive errors. For the convenience of these patients GOWRISA EYE CARE CENTRE has been made geriatric friendly with ample parking space and drop off facility at the entry point providing easy access to the OPD.

GOWRISA EYE CARE CENTRE provides all service facilities ensuring smooth and efficient patient flow in the OPD. On arrival the patient can make his/her registration promptly at the clearly sign posted reception desk just inside the main entry. All arrangement have been made to make the patient registration simple, hazzle free and quick. The patient is then directed to the well lit, ventilated and air conditioned waiting area.

Colour provokes a psychic vibration. It hides a power still unknown but real, which acts on every part of the body. It also has a long term effect on bodily functions viz brain activity, production of hormones, just as it influences our mood and emotions. So is our waiting area, where colour and lighting have both been efficiently blended to create a mentally uplifting environment.

No more carrying around case records or waiting for the nurse to bring them from the registration counter to the consultation room. All records are electronic and case sheets e-case sheets with quick uploading and prompt access from the OPD. The wait listing is computerized to perfection. We have high speed networking & WIFI and all records are easily accessible electronically from every single clinic room in the hospital saving valuable time for the patient and doctor.

Patient are usually taken up by prior appointment over telephone. Nevertheless walk-in patients are also taken, but mostly new. In order to provide better quality patient care GOWRISA EYE CARE CENTRE follows a “Do it once and do it well principle” ie:  completing as many examinations and investigations as is needed in one clinic visit rather than having patients to re-attend the OPD to complete investigations at subsequent dates. This suffixes to say that per patient time would be 15-20 minutes, and to avoid difficulties and time loss, it is preferable to have a prior appointment . All patients who need follow up and further visits are given their specific time slots and dates of appointment, when they leave after the initial visit. All patients are routinely reminded over telephone prior to their appointed dates.

Refractive are the most common disease death in the OPD. The current global burden being 1-2 million uncorrected refractive errors account for 43% of total visual unapparent can even lead to visual loss. Refractive error is the problem of focusing.

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases which result in damage to the optic nerve and gradually need to loss of vision. Vision loss from glaucoma once is occurs it permanent.

Affecting about 67 million people globally, it is the second leading cause of blindness, next to cataracts. It is often called “The silent thief of sight” because the loss of vision it causes, usually occurs slowly over a long period of time. It diagnosed and treatment started early, it is possible to slow or stop the progression of disease. Medicines, laser or surgery is the treatment option.

The pressure of the eyes is often elevated in glaucoma and the goal of treatment is to maintain the eye pressure in the range 10-18 mm of Hg. If glaucoma patient thus has to have regular eye checkup to monitor the pressure of the eye ball.

Gluacoma also causes changes in the visual field, which the patient fails to notice in the initial stages, since it is confused to the periphery or sides. A detailed examination of the visual field –Peremetry- done properly can pick up this in the early stages itself. Hence a visual field (Peremetry) is always mandatory in such patients.

Once diagnosed early, glaucoma progression can very effectively be controlled with the use of eye drops.

If you have a history of glaucoma in your family, you run a high chance of having this condition. So do get yours eyes checked as soon as possible.

Diabetic Retinopathy ia the most common eye disease that affects diabetes patients. When damage
occurs to the retina it can eventually lead to blindness. High levels of blood sugar and blood pressure
cause damage to the blood vessels in the retina sometimes leading to their breakage and leaking of
blood and finally blindness.

80% of all people who have diabetes for 20 years or more develop diabetic retinopathy. The longer a person has diabetes, the higher is his or her chances of developing diabetic retinopathy.

The disease often has no early warning signs and the symptoms like diminished or blurred vision, double vision & appearance of floaters ( seeing moving black dots in the visual field) if at all, appear late in the course. Diabetic retinopathy can be diagnosed by a normal routine examination of the eye. Early monitoring, proper diagnosis and treatment can reduce the occurrence of new cases even up to 90%.

Visual acuity testing without and with pupil dilation, Ophthalmoscopy & slit lamp biomicroscopy, perimetry are all done to confirm the diagnosis and start early treatment.

Subject your eyes to regular complete chek-up at least once every year if your are a diabetic.

Always keep your blood sugar & pressure levels as near to normal as possible.

Maintain your body weight in the ideal range, exercise regularly, avoid use of tobacco and follow a healthy diet habit. This way you can prevent Diabetic Retinopathy from affecting your job, rest time, social interactions, reading habits, outdoor life etc and help you to maintain a high quality of living.

A relatively new entity, this is a disease of the new generation and an effect of modernity. Modern work & life style entails extended hours in close range activities using smart phones, computers, tablets e-reader and hand held gaming gadgets. The result is an ever increasing number of symptoms namely dry & irritated eyes, eye strain, headache, double vision, blurred vision, neck & shoulder pain etc. These symptoms of digital eye strain/computer vision syndrome are mostly temporary but sometimes remain for a long time.

Eyes are made to work more, leading to eye discomfort, visual problems and lack of ability to concentrate and ultimately to reduction in productivity. The gravity of the problem depends on the level of individuals visual abilities and amount of time spent on such work.

Here at the Digital eye strain clinic, you will have the consultant delving into details of your work history to pin point the individual factors which cause additional demands on your visual system. Each patient will be advised accordingly to improve his/her visual ability on such matters as proper viewing distances & angles, seating, lighting etc. You will be subjected to tests of visual acuity and focusing power of your eyes to assess the magnitude of Digital eye strain.

GOWRISA EYE CARE CENTRE offers an array of special lenses to meet the unique visual demands of the patient to improve visual comfort.

We also provide vision therapy/visual training– a structured program of visual activities to improve visual abilities and train your eyes and brain to work more effectively.
